WINONA -- The currently out-of-service Winona water well located in the area of Greensboro Street will soon be repaired.

According to Winona water superintendent Frank Faulkner, parts to repair the pump should arrive at the end of this week, and crews from Donald Smith Company will need two to three days to make the repairs.

The Mayor and Board of Aldermen declared a state of emergency last month due to the mechanical failure of the city's water well.

According to Faulkner, the city's number four well is currently out of commission due to a breakdown of the well's pump. However, Faulkner confirmed that no Winona water customer lost water pressure or went without water due to the breakdown, and backup wells are working to support water usage for those customers.

The cost to repair the well is estimated to be between $35,000 to $40,000 by an engineer with Donald Smith Company.

In other water news, after speaking with state officials, city water crews were requested to replace approximately 120 water meters that must be replaced after meter readers reported they were not functioning.

“They told us we have more water going out than what we are being paid for,” Faulkner said.

City Clerk June Williams said it would cost the city approximately $1,650 to replace 40 meters in one month.

Currently, those with broken water meters are being charged a flat rate. Faulkner said with new meters being installed, the city should not have to raise water rates because those readings should make up for the shortfall.

“[The state] told us that every person living in the home uses around 65 gallons of water per day,” Faulkner said. “If the [meter] reads more or less than that, they should be checked.”
