Eighteen years ago, Mary Frances Hurt-Wright began a festival in the tiny community of Avalon to celebrate the memory of her grandfather and blues legend, Mississippi John Hurt. That festival has now become an international draw, with people from Australia and even Japan coming to Avalon to attend in the John Hurt festival.

WINONA -- Two local high school graduates were honored during the Ambitious Girls-Empowered Women and Brothers Building Brothers mentoring programs inaugural scholarship banquet. The banquet honored Winona High School graduates Ambra McCaskill and Cameron Huell and took place at the Winona Community Center on Aug. 4.
The Town of Duck Hill has to go back to the drawing board to find a company to help pilot their study for water improvements in the town. Joe Sutherland of Sutherland Engineering and Surveying in Grenada told the board he had to reject both of the proposals sent in to perform the water improvement study.
Qualifying is currently underway for the two elected seats on the Winona-Montgomery Consolidated School Board. The other three members will be appointed by the Winona Board of Aldermen, per the consolidation statute.
The race will be decided during the general election to be held on November 6.
