James Keith “Jimmy” Mitchell
Celebration of Life Memorial Service for James Keith “Jimmy” Mitchell, 68, were held at noon Saturday, May 19, 2018, at First Baptist Church in Corinth, with Rev. Dennis Smith officiating. Graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 2, 2018 at Oakwood Cemetery in Winona.
Jimmy died May 16, 2018, at Magnolia Regional Health Center. He was born March 2, 1950 in Tupelo to the late James and Evelyn Mitchell. He was a 1968 graduate of Winona High School and 1972 graduate of Delta State University with a BS in Education.
He began his 40 years of teaching and coaching football in Winona (3), and over the years moved to Okeechobee, Fla. (3), Kosciusko (3), Tupelo (11), Pontotoc (4), Fulton (2), and Corinth, having retired after 14 years there. He was a member of Mississippi Coach Association, coached in the MS-AL All-Star Game and Mississippi All-Star Game both as an assistant then as head coach. In 2017, he was inducted in the Northeast Mississippi Coaches Hall of Fame. He was named Daily Journal Coach of the Year. He attended First Baptist Church, he and his wife enjoyed traveling in their Motor Coach and spending time with family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Angelyn Harrison Mitchell; daughter Katie Mitchell Townsend and her husband David of Parsons, Tenn.; sisters, Judy M. Stanford her husband Jerry of Carrollton and Jan M. Davis of Ocean Springs; brother, Johnny Mitchell his wife Angela of Tupelo.
Pallbearers are Dennis Kelly, Durwood McCormick, George Weaver, Ricky Black, Pete McMurry, Chris Coleman, Mike Gunn, James Daniel, Dale Hayes and Ryan Summers.
Honorary pallbearers are his former players.
Family will receive friends Saturday from 10 a.m. to service time at First Baptist Church.
