WINONA – A man is facing charges for purposefully setting fire to a duplex apartment.
The Winona baseball team suffered a post Spring Break letdown, dropping three games after returning from a Spring Break trip to Florida. The Tigers fell to 3-8 with two losses to East Webster, 14-0 and 16-10, and one to Calhoun Academy 4-1.
The Winona tennis team is off to a 1-3 start, but has shown improvement during the season, according to Coach Lance VanHorn. “We're gaining experience every time we play,” he said.
The Tigers lost to East Webster and Mississippi School for Math and Science by 5-2 scores, defeated Greenville 5-2 and lost to Cleveland Central 6-1.
The Winona Christian Stars have had a hard time defending their MAIS AA State baseball Championship this year because of the rain.
The Stars did manage to squeeze in two games last week at the Rush Tournament in Meridian as they lost 10-7 to MHSAA Class 5A Neshoba Central and beat MHSAA Class 3A Choctaw Central 8-1.
On the gridiron and on the diamond, J.Z. George senior Josh Wiggins is a versatile athlete.
In football, he was an all-star punter and a two-way lineman. For the Jaguars' baseball team, he pitches and plays centerfield.
There was an eight-hour bus ride each way when the Winona baseball team traveled to Florida for two games during Spring Break, but coach Mark Austin feels the trip was beneficial.
“The main thing is that it keeps the guys together for teamwork,” he said. “The more they are together, the better they will play.”
The J.Z. George softball team fell to 0-2 with an 18-0 loss to Charleston. Jessica Liddell, Olivia Carpenter, Tyeshia Grant and Destiny Clardy had hits for J.Z. George.
“Our pitching improved this game, but we struggled to hit the ball,” said coach Jamie Tucker.
Another problem was that Charleston had 23 stolen bases.
It was a rough week for the Carroll Academy Rebels as they dropped three games.
The Rebels dropped two district games last week, falling 5-2 to Central Holmes on Tuesday and 16-6 on Thursday. The Rebels finished the week with a 10-0 loss to Benton.
